Edit two weeks later - Up front I can recommend this speaker. I have had it near a month now. Confess I have not listened to it as much as I probably should have. But I turned it on today and was pleasantly met with good sound. Perhaps stepping away for a few days was a good idea to clear my ears LOL.Stereo is one big reason for liking this one. A mono speaker just irritates me for some reason. Clean sound for both bass and treble. I haven't seen side by side comparisons for portable Bluetooth speakers in stereo. My comparison is for many years of having my own stereos and listening to music since I was a kid.I'm raising from one star to four (5 stars would require having this longer and feeling very confident about longevity) for the following reasons: I was shipped a new one which went smoothly, customer service was good. This works very good as a TV speaker. Just connect your auxiliary cable to and from. Note you can't control the volume remotely. You have to get up and adjust the speaker manually. With Bluetooth connectivity yes you can control the volume for playing music for example from your cell phone.Turning on the loudness option (additional bass), is something I will be doing every time. Note every time you turn it on, the volume resets to 50% and the loudness option is off. I have been listening to music all my life, the additional base setting provides a much better balance with trouble, whether high volume or low, but especially at low volume.Playing at about 70% volume, fills my slightly rectangular approx. 20 ft by 15 ft living room up certainly past conversational levels. 50% is a good volume and you can carry on a conversation. Going from 70% to 100% is really almost like a 40 to 50% increase in volume. From 0% to 70% is sort of like regular acceleration on a car. 70 to 100% would be like when you step on it to pass a Mack truck LOL. Listening to a blues song right now, the bass guitar comes through clear, and the guitar, symbols, conga drums, and other travel items come through equally clear. At lower volumes, the bass setting is a requirement to ensure that you get some depth. It still sounds good actually.Don't compare pre-80's recordings, because they (many-to-most) were recorded with less bass. You start getting into the 80s, 90s and 2000s, the bass is much more rich. The bright red volume LED (much brighter on "bass" option) is still annoying sitting in front of your face. I cover it up.Crackling noise I heard on one song was duplicated on another Bluetooth device, so I don't think it was this speaker. I suggest turn off any app equalizer. I think my Spotify app was causing high volume compression, that loud quiet loud quiet annoying issue when set at max volume.-------- Review from two weeks prior --------Do not recommend. I've had stereos and music all my life. My initial impression was good overall, but has since gone downhill...The first one I ordered was dead on arrival. Initially I would say that the sound was good overall. I actually did an entire video review but maybe I just won't post it. I got another one a few days later and had my son listen to it. He rated it lousy because at maximum volume the volume would fluctuate up and down. I just got through testing it a few minutes ago and it did have the same problem with volume fluctuating.Running Spotify app flat, the speaker produces high treble. You must have the single option, bass on or off, turned on at all times. This is a large bulky item in depth. It has the handle strangely toward the front and does not allow for your hand to wrap around. Your fingers get cramped up against the plastic in an odd carrying way. It's fairly heavy, appears to be built well, I mean if it can float in the water. But who's going to do that? Your 15-year-old who hangs out in the pool once in awhile?I noted if you want good booming sound, you have to have it up all the way. The first one I had, it sounded good but would only work when it was plugged into AC power.Update: I've updated this review to 3 stars from 2, with amended review at end. I am still leaving the original review because the experience was unsettling and it seems like you have a 50/50 shot of getting a speaker or a lemon. This speaker lasted literally less than a day. Did it work? Yes, and it worked quite well, for an hour or two. Then, it just stopped and made a strange sound and the lights started going haywire. We tried to turn it off and could not. When I picked it up from the pool, I noticed it was about 3x as heavy and filled with water. The seal on the back was still very tightly locked. We then noticed a very small tear in the fabric of the right speaker, where we assume the water had gradually made its way in. The light show kept going, and there was no turning it off. We left the unit in the car overnight and when we got in the vehicle to go back to the pool the next day, one of our children cried, "Mom, the speaker is boiling!" The speaker began roaring out garbage static, like an old television with the volume on max tuned to a channel with no signal. The volume knob was all the way down, and yet, it still churned and gurgled, frightening the children. "It's gonna explode!" one of them cried. We took the beast out of the car and left it on the side of the driveway to die. The extra star in this review is for the battery, because it took two days for it to finally die. Great battery life! We are not sure if the speaker had been torn before we received it or during playback, but in any case, the quality is definitely of concern, because we hadn't had it to the max and the speaker is inherently its own amp and should have some sort of self-protection mode, if it wasn't already damaged prior to shipping, which is of equal concern. Had this incident not happened, we would have certainly raved about how cool it was to have a floating speaker, and commented that the sound, for a bluetooth portable, is definitely decent for a basic outdoor family gathering. But once the speaker begins drowning and having a robotic disco light-show meltdown and starts screaming like a techno banshee at your children, you need to Old Yeller the sucker. I tried to write a review on Amazon before, but they suspiciously would not allow this item to be reviewed there, citing there were some suspicious reviews of this product being made, and only verified purchasers could review it. I found that more suspicious than the suspicious suspicions that they suspected being so suspicious was the fact that I did purchase mine directly through the website and still got that error for a few days. Maybe it was all the people who bought it on Prime Day and found they wound up with a lemon? In either case, I don't want to entirely discount this zombie Rainbow Brite technogeist. It was quite fun, before it churned and gurgled and shot laserbeams into the stars. So, being the gluttons for punishment that I am, I did ask for a replacement unit, and I will give my Mix 2.0 2.0 a fair chance, because we do have an upcoming trip and that was the original purpose for the purchase. If we get another lemon/demon, I will be done with Altec Lansing, and will be back to decree it so. But, if it goes well and survives the remainder of the summer, I may be back to update and add a star or two to my review. So, in summary - great fun, and decent sound, until the colorful disco-death spiral, and then, a somewhat comical, but overall pesky electronic poltergeist that needs to be taken out back and shot in the face.Updated review: I was able to take the replacement speaker on vacation with me and used the speaker at poolside. The sound is better than I would expect for a bluetooth speaker and the ability to have great music playing right next to the pool is nice. I did not feel comfortable placing the speaker in the pool, after the previous experience. Because I feel as though I have to treat this speaker like it is made of fine china, I can't really take the stars up beyond 3, as the point of this speaker is to be a rugged and robust unit to cart with you on rough and wet terrain. Overall, great sound, but treat it as you would a normal boombox from the 80's and try not to get it wet or rough it up.I've owned AL speakers for years. Always loved them. I don't love this one. In fact, I barely even like this one.It does have great sound and it connects to Bluetooth easily. Both important factors and the reason for three stars. My problems are in the charging and playback time. It's about a six-hour charge from 0-100%. That is if it doesn't just randomly stop charging. I was lucky to get the same amount of playback time as it took to charge. I would be charging it and it would stop, indicating to me, that it was full. Then when connecting to Bluetooth my phone would display the charged level and it could still be as low as 10%. Meaning it could be several extra hours until full due to numerous resets. And the 20 hours, playback? My butt! I Haven't got more than 6 or 7 hours, Max! And that was without the silly Disco lights on. It made for a super disappointing day out on the river first time taking out out.And while I'm ripping them...There is no real working app or remote for this speaker. It's not a big deal to get off my rear end to turn it on or hit the Bass Boost, but it might be for some. You can use the phone (Bluetooth) for volume. It seems to be a crap shoot whether you get a good working unit or not. I'm not into trying again only to find the same problems so I'm going to return this and maybe try out the JBL or something else comparable to the AL sound. This speaker is great! It has very good sound, awesome bass boost. I love that it's waterproof. I've used it in the rain. It performed well.Great overall speaker. Hard to connect to BluetoothMy charger broke. i called the company and asked for a new 1. I'm even happy to pay for it. They make 0 replacement parts. Told me to talk to who ever I got it from. Amazon only sell the speaker. They don't make replacement parts. Considering the literal manufacture does not make any sort of replacement parts, id skip this. If any thing breaks or goes missing your screwed, Have to buy a full new speaker.I must say that this thing is huge. It's my biggest bluetooth speaker. The sound quality is very balanced. When you activate the extra bassfeature, they don't call it "the beast" for nothing. This speaker has a lotof power. I don't know how many watts, but it's powerful. The front part of the speaker is very nice (the look and the lights)The degree of finish of the body (grey part) is soso (uneven painting)But who cares ? As long as the sound is good .... this thing rocks !It's an ok speaker but my unit has battery issues. The battery lasts for half as long as it should (maybe less) then the device shuts down and the USB outlet for charging another device works but it's so slow it's useless. Altec Lansing expects you to ship it back to them at your cost and then they decide to repair or replace....which is less terrible when you live close to them but I live on the other side of the continent so shipping will cost me a lot. I saw in the reviews there was some battery issues but suspected they were isolated incidents but maybe not...so BUYER BEWARE on this one...I would say it's a risky purchase, strongly consider other options. Amazon, however, has been very helpful...I'm just disappointed with Altec Lansing. The sound quality isnt that clear, it has good base and mid range but very little on the high range.
