The fabric, style and organization of this deep blue Dakine split 38l bag are great. The main compartment has one big section and then two smaller sections that face the front. This split design is appealing to me, but the main compartment did seem like it was just a smidge shallow. In return though the two smaller sections actually hold a fair amount. The zippered mesh top of the main compartment can act a bit as a built in packing cube. The bottom shoe pocket was just wide enough I could fit my size 13 men’s shoes in sideways, so it aced that test. Note the shoe pocket when in use eats into the main compartment space, but when not in use the shoe pocket liner is thin and out of the way. I could fit my shoes and clothes for a four day trip in. It’s hard to tell from the pictures, but the vertical zipper on the front of the bag accesses one of the smaller interior sections. You could easily store headphones, snacks or a light jacket in there.. The compression straps help to reduce the volume if the bag isn’t full, and the fabric is strong enough that the bag has quite a bit of structure even when empty.
