Description

Product Description Lightweight, compact, lithium battery powered Weapon Mounted Tactical Illuminator with integrated IR LED and the latest in visible power C4 LED technology. The light is built with shock-proof LEDs and provides at least 2.5 hours of continuous run time when using visible illumination mode or 20 hours when using IR illumination mode. Tethered battery door and latch mechanism prevents battery door loss while providing easy battery replacement. Strobe activated on two or more momentary paddle hits for guaranteed entry into mode. Rail clamp designed to rapidly attach/detach from side of weapon without tools. Made using 6000 Series machined aircraft aluminum with black anodized finish for the main body and high impact, chemically resistant engineering polymer for the IR LED housing. High temperature, shock mounted, impact resistant Boro Float glass lens. 8,000 c and ela peak beam intensity and 160 lumens measured system output. 2.5 hours regulated runtime. 20 hours regulated runtime when using IR illumination mode. Securely fits all weapons with MIL-STD-1913 rails. Extensively live-fire tested impact resistant construction. Operating temperature: -40°F to +140°F. IPX7 rated design. waterproof to 1 meter for 30 minutes. User programmable strobe enable/disable. Serialized for positive identification. Like most Streamlight products, the TLR-VIR hit another home run. I have a Colt LE6940 and an ITT NQ6015 Gen3 night vision monocular. My TLR-1 (or a Surefire flashlight) with an IR filter over it is OK for higher illumination indoors or outdoors to about 10-15 yards. However, the TLR-VIR IR is good for highly increased added IR illumination to about 100 yards outdoors, yet not too bright (no washout) for use indoors. Just what I was looking for! The visible flashlight is the same 300 lumen as the TLR-1 output. Which is fine. Made with same high quality as the rest of the TLR weapon light line.Update: These TLR-VIR's can be bought new on ebay for around $100.00Edit Tip: As others have noticed, there is a LED visible red light that shows when the IR is turned on. I did quite a bit of research and experimentation to get rid of it. The IR runs on 750-875nm wavelength. However, that LED red glow is different from the 400-700nm visible spectrum. It actually is glowing at 750-875nm! I tried using overexposed color film and floppy disk material to get rid of it. They both cut down the visible but also cut down the IR too.I then purchased from Edmund Optics a few "longpass" filters and the only one that worked well was a #54-664 RG-850nm 12.5mm diameter Longpass filter (black colored glass) for $22.50. This cuts off any IR LED visible below 850nm (plus or minus 10), though still lower than the the VIR's upper 875nm limit. This reduced the visible red by 75%. It changed from a really bright red to a dull maroon color that is not visible unless you are dead center and dead height level with it. Did not effect the IR intensity at all. What is really needed is a 875nm longpass filter that cuts off led visible at exactly 875nm. Unfortunately, none is available unless you want to pay for a custom filter or a coating at a cost of $2K!As for install, this RG-850nm 1/2" diameter, 3mm thick black glass filter is only a wee bit larger than the plastic surround on the IR lens. I put a very thin coat of JB Weld around that plastic surround to glue it in place. Looks and works great.Con: There is one minor flaw on the TLR-VIR. There is a small dime sized rubber button cover for the remote control to plug into the unit. Popped it off to check it out and when trying to put it back, it just does not really stay in the hole. Slightest jar and it will fall back out. It is not really a snap in cover, will check with Streamlight tomorrow. Edit: called Streamlight and they are sending me another cap, though they admit it really is not a "snap-in" cover. Why they did not do this is beyond me. Not a major issue though.
