One night awhile back, I reached for the not-so-cheap rechargeable flashlight I bought from a big-box retailer, and . . . nothing. This wasn't the first time the thing had left me in the dark. Cursing, I vowed at that moment to invest good money in a flashlight that would stand up to a simple standard: When I switched it on, it would bring me light.I began researching flashlights, paying less attention to price and more to construction quality and consumer reviews. I figured that in the long run, I'd be better off paying more (even much more) for one long-lasting, reliable flashlight than for several short-termers that ended up as disposables.Though I was unfamiliar with the Pelican brand, several factors sold me on it--LED brightness, virtually indestructible materials (this thing could serve a useful self-defense purpose, if needed), and a smart design that uses edges so the flashlight doesn't roll away when you set it down. To that, add the fact that it's waterproof to a certain depth, AND the company offers a generous, no-nonsense warranty. On top of all that, I found lots of stellar reviews from customers. And those buyers were right. This is a serious flashlight--tough, durable, substantial but not too heavy. And when I click the "on" button, there is indeed light--a long-range burning ray of bright, white, night-busting light. (I'm convinced the astronauts in the international space station can see me when I wave the light toward the sky.) Now I look for opportunities to use the flashlight. Need to find a pendant you dropped in the grass? Let me get my Pelican. Wondering if that's an owl perched in that tree down the street? Let's get the Pelican. Would you like to peer into the darkness of the human soul? Good thing I have my Pelican.Simply put, this is a fantastic flashlight. It does what it's supposed to do. I was so impressed that I bought two Pelicans--the 8060 for my car, the smaller (and equally solid) 7060 for my house. Both recharge easily, and both have impressive charge lives. (I top them off once a month or so, but I've never run either of them all the way down yet.)No more junk flashlights for me. These two Pelicans might be the last flashlights I ever have to buy. And if I do buy others, they'll be Pelicans.
